NEW MEDIA GROUP 4 subgroup 12 CLIMATE CHANGE AND CLOTHING

 Introduction

Scene 1: Opening shots of clothing piled on top of each other.

Narration: Do you know how bad fast fashion is for the planet?. An estimated $140 million worth of used clothing goes to the landfill each year. Buying one white cotton shirt produces the same emission as driving a car for 35 miles. The average piece of clothing is worn 36% fewer times than it was 15 years ago. 60% of garments are now made from polyester and it takes longer period to decompose. The pressure from the fashion industry is relentless. (00:00 – 00.38)

Scene 2: An interview video of a clothing vendor in kantamanto market with the caption “how the bales of clothing are imported to Ghana and sold”

Scene 3: long shot of a bustling market street with people selling and buying clothes with the caption “typical day at kantamanto market: a place for selling used clothes” (01:09 – 01:22)

Scene 4: interview shots of a clothing vendor explaining how used clothes are not disposed but rather sold with the highest discount in order to get rid of them. ( 01: 23- 01:41)

Narration: ( 01: 25- 01.26) according to this woman who sell the used clothes in bale, they do not dispose the unwanted used clothes. They make sure people buy at the least price of 1 cedis

Scene 5: shots of abandoned clothing by the seashore, in the landfills and in the gutters ( 01:44 – 02: 15)

Narration: why can’t I be passed on to the next person but rather discarded in this insensitive way even though you know I will cause harm to your environment. Donate your clothing to save your environment (01: 45 – 02:14)

Scene 6:

Interview shot of a clothing vendor talking about how rejected clothes are sold in bulk to companies to make handkerchiefs

Narration: according to those at Kantamanto market, they send the unwanted used clothes to factories or individuals for use. While these people believe the used clothes are sent to people for it to be used for other things, not all are used there is still an amount that goes to the landfill each now and then (02:31- 03: 06)

Scene 7: a video of a landfill in kantamanto where unsold clothes are burnt

Narration: this is a landfill found at the center of kantamantomarket, Accra. Where it is believed that they sell and burn unsold clothes. Burning of unwanted clothes affects human health hence affecting climate change (03:06 -03: 18)

Scene 8

An educative piece on how to choose a sustainable way of handling clothings instead of burning them.

Narration: if you don’t want to dispose your dress, you can choose a sustainable way by donating it if you can wear it again (03:18- 03:27)

Final scene: an ending scene showing people thrifting clothes, showing the awareness cards from the campaign the group members embarked on (03:28 -04:04)
