Is burning the only option?: The Alarming Impact of Clothing Incineration on Climate"
STORY BY : Frimpong Efua Nancy
In a global pursuit of climate awareness, recent statistics indicate a concerning rise in the problems caused by the burning of clothes. According to BBC Earth, an estimated €29 million worth textiles were incinerated as of the year 2017. The smoke from this seemingly harmless act releasescarbon dioxide, Methane and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere which contributes to the depletion of the Ozone layer. This trend has not only posed a threat to the air quality but also exacerbated the global climate crisis.
Experts have emphasized the need for sustainable fashion practices and urged consumers to prioritize clothing recycling and donation over disposal. As the fashion industry fights with its environmental impact, the call for responsible consumption is more critical than ever. The burning question remains “can we afford to let our clothes fuel the flames of climate change?”
